Lower Unit Puzzle

Hello,

I just purchased an older 72 650 that seems to be in great shape (very clean). The previous owner removed the lower unit to replace the old water pump but never reassembled the unit back onto the motor. Last night I fit the lower unit back onto the motor but there is a problem. The prop is engaged (forward) when the shifter is set in the neutral position. I dissembled the lower unit from the motor and I will attempt to fit it up again tomorrow under better lighting conditions.

Does anyone have any advice or trick for fitting these units back on to the motors. Why is it always harder to put something back together instead of taking something apart??

Re: Lower Unit Puzzle

Both the boat and the LU must be in the same gear, prior to installation and the recommended gear is dependant on what reverse locking cam is being used.

As you don't provide a s/n, here is a link to a condensed version of the service manual. Let the page load for several seconds and download to your computer soonest as the link is only valid for a short time:

See page 13/16, last paragraph before POWER TILT/TRIM.
