Lower unit question

Hi Guys, I have been refurbishibg a 59 Evinrude 10HP that sat for about 20 years. I started it today for the first time in trash can full of water and let it idle in neutral for about 10 minutes. When I shut it down I noticed a thick coating of brown/milky oil floating on the water. I drained the lower unit and the 90 wt oil didn't look milky, could this oil be from the exhaust or do I need to replace the seals in the lower unit? If I need to replace the seals what ones would you expect to be bad?
Thanks to all you folks that take the time to help.

Re: Lower unit question

Tough to say, as those motors love to drop oil of all kinds everywhere. It could easily be from the exhaust or from the gear case. Your description of brown/milky sounds like gear oil mixed with water, but then you stated that the oil that you drained out looked fine. My advice would be to run it once or twice on a boat and then drain it again.

For years my '63 Johnson would have milky gear oil at the end of the season. Those things are tanks. Just this spring, I pulled apart the gear case and realized that the previous owner had gotten the gasket sealant all over the O-rings.

I wouldn't worry too much. Just run it normal and check it after a few uses.

A 2s motor running in a barrel will always leave the water a mess. Perfectly normal ... I think you answered your own question when you drained the gear oil. The gear oil, if there was water, always shows it.
