Lower unit question

Hi folks, long time lurker first time poster here.

I have I believe, a 1976 4cyl Merc 850 Canadian serial number 7071854. The lower unit is leaking like a sieve and there is a local 1982 50HP 4cyl available quite cheaply because the power head is shot but lower is OK. Is there ANY chance this lower unit will work for me? Or should I just start rebuilding the lower I have? Ive tried to scour the previous posts but it seems this is a bit of a weird combo, so perhaps it's not possible?
