Lower unit question

Hi

I am replacing the waterpump on a Johnson 55 1980 and just noted that when I turn the axel that connects the lowerunit with the engine I can turn the axel 1/4 before the propeller turns, bith forward and reverse.

Is this how it should be or do I have a problme with the lower unit in some way?

I also note some ticking when turning, but that could be okay I guess since it is gears or?

What you are describing is normal. Check the oil, and if ok, move on and don't worry about it. Might as well go ahead and change the oil if it hasn't been done lately.
