Lower unit question

I tried my 1957 Fast Twin 18 Evinrude out last weekend. The next morning I checked out the lower unit and found milky oil. At first I thought that I needed to rebuild the lower unit but after tinkering a little bit I noticed one screw on the lower unit was loose and a little of that milky oil was coming out of it.Could this have let the water in? I was told by a Mech. freind that it would and I should just put some rtv gasket material on it and forget it.
I do plan on testing it again in the lake becuase I tried the barrel for about half an hour and oil looks good. Any thoughts as to what I should do?

Yep, water can get in that way. Dont put RTV on the plug, Use the correct gasket. About .50

Re: Lower unit question

Sorry< I meant putting the rtv on the screw itself . I havn't broke the seal on the lower unit as of yet. If I do I've already found an entire lower unit rebuild kit. I was just hoping that I wouldn't have to.

Thanks Trent

Re: Lower unit question

I have another Q. I have an air leak on my Rude at the fuel ine connection. is it possible to rebuild the dual connector.? The engine pumps air into the fuel tank to force fuel into the carb.
Anyone have any ideas :D
Thanks ;)

Kenrude about all that is needed to rebuild that connector is the o-rings. you will have to use a pick or something similar to remove them, then kinda wad them up and reinsert them. It's usually a cussing project.

Hi kenrude
Yes you can install new o-rings in your connector. These o-rings are a fat little things. I can't imagine tring to stuff them into that little hole. No wonder some guys cuss. I use a long skinny punch. Put the punch in the hose end and tap out the works.
This a whole lot easier and you won't tear up your o-rings or brass fittings. You can still cuss if you want. Good luck.
