lower unit question

sorry for bugging yall again but,can anybody tell me how many year models and hp will interchange lower units with a 1962 10hp. Evinrude. I am having a hard time finding parts want see if I can find another motor for parts.I think it is a 15 inch shaft but not sure how it is measured.sorry for posting again but I could not find my old one.

Look guys just trying to get this motor right I want to take my kids out fishing. Thought I had it right but found other problems in the lower unit lower bearing is bad and messed up the drive shaft.I am having a hard time finding parts.I build boats for a living .In case you are wondering what brand it is Caravelle,build them ,fix them under warranty,only 15 yrs. at it but not repairing engines .Look I can build them from the barrel to the truck they are shipped on,but engines are not my specialty,I can install new ones and trouble shoot most wiring and mechanical problems on new boats. I am not trying to be ugly or nothing just tired of messing with this motor.My wife has thretened to burn my boat if I don,t get done messing with this engine.

Hi Taz,<br /> Hmmm. OMC made a lot of changes to gears, shafts and linkages in that era with that gearcase. Exactly what will interchange, I'm not sure. As a complete unit, any of the regular length gearcases from the 1958 to 1963 10hp models will work.<br /> If your driveshaft wasn't too badly buggered by the bearing going bad, then you might be able to use it in a 1964 or later 9.5hp mushroom motor gearcase. You'd also have to swap out the shift rod. I believe (but not 100% sure) that the gears and splinages are all the same.<br /> Don't let someone sell you a 5.5 or 7.5hp lower unit. The exterior casting was the same, but the innards are MUCH different.<br />- Scott

Can tell you 4 sure nothing < 1957 will work. Totally different gears, housings, shafts, shift rods, prop shaft...

ChineWalker<br /><br />Will the gear cluster/drive shaft from a 10 HP in the 58-63 year range fit the casting from a 58-63 5.5 or 7.5 HP?
