Hi,
I have a 50 HP Johnson. Last season the lower unit went out on it. I found a used lower unit that I bought from a private party. I paid a dealer to install it. When I picked it up he said it worked fine in Forward gear, neutrat was fine. It would shift into revese but made a vibration and clicking noise in the shift lever like it wanted to jump out of gear. So I stop in by the dealer a few weeks ago and he gives me a deal on another complete 50 HP Johnson for parts. So I have him put the new lower unit on my engine. It works fine in forward and reverse, but I notice if I shift slowly into reverse it makes the same clicking and vibrating till in engages fully. Than it is fine. So I am wondering if this is a problem with the shifter lilnkage or the lower unit? Is there a way of testing a lower unit when it is off the power head?
