Hi, I am a first time boat owner. I just got done replacing all the seals and water pump in my lower unit. (1973 Johnson 115) Looking back and doing some final reading I noticed the DO NOT intall the seals dry. Well that is what I did of course. Just wondering if it is going to be ok or is this something that has to be done and worth draining and tearing everthing back down again. Also...those 4 little bolts with the o-rings on them ....prop shaft housing? the o-rings keep on shredding on me. Do these bolts only need to be snug tight?
thanks

What do you mean shredding on you. I would pressure test it before I pulled it back apart.

The undercut on the back side of the carrier bolts should accomodate the 'o' rings without causing them to shread. However,I would recommend applying some light grease to them to prevent the shreading you mentioned. This is assuming that the grooves are clean and free of burrs and you are using the proper size 'o' rings.Otherwise it is my opinion and my opinion only that the seals will be fine without lube and as long as they are installed properly and their mating surfaces are free of nicks and buildup, that they should seat in just fine.
