Lower unit rebuild and assembly questions........

I am assembling my lower unit, pics to come later. I am wondering since I don't have the special tools for torquing the pinion gear to the driveshaft can I get by tightening it down snug and using medium loctite?

Does the gear assy kit come with all of the o-rings for all areas of the lower unit or are there some I need to buy separately?

If there's any other things that I'm missing? If so feel free to chime in.

Where do I need to use silicone, around the water pump housing? any other places? I have the black type in case it's needed.

Should all bearings be greased even though I'm going to add gear oil for the initial startup? Does the carrier bearing o-ring get lightly greased or be a little liberal?

Where do i need to make sure to use the anti seize compound to prevent seizing up of certain parts?

I was told that when I get it back together while the engine is off to put it into gear and manually try to turn the prop to check that it turns harder meaning that it's in gear vs free spinning when out of gear? I have been told the shift rod should be about 7 turns in when I install it as I didn't know to check it when removing it. I feel it wasn't proper looking back as the plastic nut had backed out and water had entered the case with the previous owner resulting in the gearcase overhaul.

When I had disassembled the water pump from the gear box last week at first I couldn't find the woodruff key because apparently it fell out and I hadn't noticed it. The next day when I was cleaning in the same area I had disassembled the water pump I found what appeared to be a small plastic woodruff key or are they metal? Maybe I should go look at the piece again. I guess I need to know whether I'm looking for a plastuic or metal part or either one.

I do plan on taking it out tomorrow possibly if I get it together tonight and after running it draining it after a bit and if it's water free I'll fill it again and throw it back in the water and go have some fun. It's a small price to pay for the oil so soon but this will keep me from destroying the lower unit should it not seal correctly I figure.

WHen I install the seals back to back do I put some grease in between the seals to offer added support against leaking?
ANy help is greatly appreciated.

Before anybody can give you accurate advice, you need to specify the year and horsepower of your engine.

Re: Lower unit rebuild and assembly questions........

I will try and ansewer your questions.
The gear should torqued to the factory spec, maybe your local dealer will rent you the tool.
The gear set will be just the gears, at least all the ones I have purchased, look at the parts breakdown and order seals and gaskets as needed. See below.
I don't think there is anyplace you need to use silicone.
I pour a little lower unit oil on the bearings and gears when I install them. Just coat the o-rings lightly with grease.
I use anti-seize on all the external bolts, not anything submerged in lower unit oil.
You need to adjust the shift rod to the proper spec, no guessing, or you will have to drop the lower unit again. If you put the lower unit in forward before you install it, you can rotate the prop to align the drive shaft with the crankshaft.
They are plastic, see #80 below.
No need to put grease between the seals, I do put a little sealer around the outside of the seals.
I hope all this makes sense to you.
