lower unit rebuild

1997 60HP Big Foot. After running great on a 20 mile river ride today, now I'm hearing "clanking" noises from the lower unit/RPM's shoot up if throttle is pushed past about 2500. Acts like a spun hub, but my prop is a hubless. Sounds like I might need a complete lower unit overhaul. Any idea how difficult this is or average cost a Mariner dealer/mechanic would charge for this?

Re: lower unit rebuild

Here is the service manual for your engine:

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/817643r1/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

It is a pretty straightforward task to remove the LU and disassemble it without having to take everything apart. This would get you to a point where you could see if there is any damage.

Once you have the prop removed, see Section 6B, page 6B-11 for removal of the bearing carrier assy and at this point you should see if there is any major damage like broken gears etc.

What is your engine s/n?
