Trying to reinstall lower unit on my 6 HP merc, 1964 outboard after replacing the water pump impeler. Any secrets to lining up the drive shaft and shift rod?

Do you remember which position your shift lever was in when you took of the lower unit?I think you are suppost to have in in reverse.Try that and if it moves closer, try to move the propeller a little while your trying and push in.
I believe it was in neutral. the biggest issue is getting the shift rod to line up with the shaft. There is enough play in the housing so it lays to one side and virtually no way to get into it to align it.
Sorry about not getting back to you.Along side the exhaust housing there is a hole that will let you access the shift shaft.Use a phillips screwdriver and try to aline the shaft.Look up in the housing and locate the shift shaft.Is it centered in the opening?If it is try to put the lower end on again and make sure the shift shaft is in neutral.
