Hi, I have the manual and read the removal part of the lower unit. It says there are some shift wires somewhere I need to take off and attach a 5 foot wire to so they will be thread downward. :( I cannot locate these wires. Also It will not come apart after taking all the bolts out? Thanks in advance

You are looking at wrong manual or wrong chapter. Should be no wires on this gear case. There 7 bolts to remove counting the trim tab bolt on the gearcase. One screw holding shift linkage under intake manifold, port side.

I looked on the port side of engine sitting in the driver seat of boat. I see some shift linkage but it's on the starbord side of the engine. I don't see how disconnecting it there is going to help.

shelby driver , If you follow the shift lever to the center of engine under lower carb area you will see a shift rod attached .This rod linkage must be disconnected to remove lower unit.

The screw under the carb should have a hex head and a slot for common screw driver.

Alright finally found the right screw to take out and got the shaft unhooked it appears. I ended up taking out the wrong screw the on on the front of the shift clamp and took off the cables too. Then I finally was able to see the proper screw with the slot in it on the starboard side as someone mentioned previously. Now I have all the bolts out (positive) like 7 and the rudder one too and it still is stuck on. (lower Unit.) I don't want to break anything by forcing it off per manual, Now what? grrrrrrrrr block of wood, wedge of wood? bfh (big freakin'hammer) It's gonna run again I know it is.

Ok now, I have the lower unit off. I had water in the gear lube. I had fishing line tied around it. Should I look for a repair shop to put in a new seal in the prop shaft? How much should I expect to pay for this service? I did have some metal filings    It appears the little rubber o rings where the screw for refilling are in good shape.

Shelby,Since you got it off, don't just change the propshaft seal.Lower unit doesn't need to be pulled just for it.Install yourself a new waterpump, driveshaft seal, and shift rod seal. The hard part is done now that you have the lower unit dropped.Shop shouldn't charge more than a couple hours labor plus parts if you decide not to perform work yourself.

)Ok I will pass on doing the prop shaft seal for now. I take it the drive shaft seal is the one under the water pump? And the other seal is an easy one up front where the shift rod goes into the lower unit? Thanks very much for your help.
Tim :)

Shelby , The propshaft seals are not a big job either.Just need to get a long thin extension and the right size socket to fit the carrier retaining bolts.Once bolts are removed you may need a puller to extract carrier assy.It will contain the propshaft lip seals and "o"rings that seal carrier to LU housing.
Yes, the driveshaft seal is under the waterpump.Shiftrod seal and gasket is fairly basic and will be obvious.
Change out the exhaust boot seals too. They're cheap.

I would just change the shiftrod cover gasket and the rod seal, which I believe is just an "o"ring.Make sure and clean the gasket surface of cover and housing well avoiding gouging into aluminum.Careful scraping and a scotchbrite pad work well.Put a film of lithium grease on "o" ring and shiftrod on re-assembly.
