Lower Unit Removal for Impeller Change

Hello,

I'm about to remove the lower unit on my mercruiser outdrive (alpha one Gen II) to replace the impeller. I'm only removing the lower unit, not the entire outdrive. I understand you must be in forward gear to remove the entire outdrive. I have researched the forum but cannot determine if I have to be in forward gear when removing only the lower unit to change the impeller. What is the requirement in this case? Is there any benefits to being in forward gear or should it be left in neutral?

Thanks.

in neutral you cant turn the driveshaft to line it up, in fwd you can turn the driveshaft with the prop to line it up. Do not hammer or pry on anything. it should drop off when all the bolts are removed.

Thanks. I also noticed when in gear (forward) the shift cable points directly to the front of the boat, so you know which way the unit should fit back together.

When reinstalling the lower unit: I found it easier to have the control in neutral and the outdrive in neutral. When you push the unit up into place, have someone kick the gearshift into forward. It should slide on in.
