Hello Forum,

My buddy has what looks to be a mid 80's Merc. We are getting no output from the tell tale so we are going to change the water pump. It hasn't been changed in years...... I can't seem to get the lower unit off though. We have taken two bolts apart on the side of the Vent plate. One bolt that holds the sacrificial anode in, and another bolt on the underside of the vent plate next to the sacrificial anode. Here is my question. On my motor the shift shaft has to be disconnected; 2000 40hp merc, Does this motor's shift shaft have to be disconnected before we remove the lower unit?

In advance, thanks for the help.

I believe there may be a bolt on the front side under a cover.

Mine also has a bolt under the little fin above the prop for compensating for steering pull. You remove the fin with a long extension from the top and the bolt is removed from under where the fin was. Yours is a little newer so it might be different. Mine has one in the back under the comp fin, 2 on the sides under the side fins and three in a triangle in front on top. Mine just has a splined shaft for both the shift rod and the driveshaft.
