Lower Unit Removal.....must I drain the gear oil?

Hey everyone, I've found some great help on this site so far, and I'd welcome any advice on the following question from folks who are savvy to Mariner lower units.

I'm about to remove the lower unit on my 2 stroke (c. 1984-'85) Mariner 50 hp 4 cyl. to service the water pump impeller. Is it possible to do this without draining the lower unit gear oil? The fill and vent screws used for this are not in great condition and I'd like to avoid unscrewing them if possible. I know, I know, the screws cost like 3 dollars and I'm going to order some with my next parts purchase, but for the meanwhile, is it alright to remove the lower unit and service the water pump while there is gear lube inside the gear case?

Thanks in advance to anyone who chimes in.

Yes, it's fine to remove it without draining.
