Lower unit removal

I'm looking to replace my impeller on my water pump. The motor is an 86 evinrude 60hp. The only thing holding me back is disconnecting the shift rod at the shift disconnect coupler. It's an intimidating bolt to undo. there's no room to get a socket onto the nut because its too close to the housing. And it's in such an awkward location a wrench cant get to it either. I have the sealoc manual but not much is mentioned about this step. Are there any tricks or approaches im not seeing? with everything from carbs to fuel pump to starter off the motor this still seems like i need a special tool or some insider info. please help.

Not 100% sure on this one, but I think on that one you remove a hitch pin from the horizontal shift shaft, which allows it to slide and that releases the shift rod.

You have more room if the lower unit is in the "reverse" gear position. It's still not easy to get to but doable.

Probably need a swivel bracket, and put the shifter in R as stated. Take that manual and put it under the lower unit while you change the lower unit oil to pick up any drops, and get a factory OEM manual. You will thank us.

On the inline three cylinder motor you need to remove the starter, that makes it a little easier to get to.
