my friend told me to put the engine in gear & leave it that way while dropping the lower unit on my 1979 johnson 200hp that I am trying to awaken after 5 years. Problem is it only seperated about 1 inch & appears to be connected somewhere under the powerhead.

Please advise

Re: lower unit removal

i have no idea about 200 hp but... my 6hp 1979 went this way. i left it in nuetral and dropped lower leg. as i dropped it, the gear lever moved to reverse (towards back of motor on the 6hp) and the lower unit dropped enough for me to get a small screwdriver between the faces ( 1/2 inch) and undo the bottom of two screws that held the shift rod together (this was joined by a clamp with the two screws top and bottom) after this, a bit of wiggling and slight rotating meant that the whole leg came down.
in my instance, which is not really the way you want it to happen the drive shaft stayed conected to powerhead and the lower unit dropped off the bottom of the shaft...none the less it is all back together now and i just need to test it in the water....i hope i can change gears :)

good luck...hope it helped in some way..buy a manual would be a great idea...just don't buy a clymer unless nothing else available.

First of all don't let it hang by the shift rod, you will bend it, get some bolts back in it tilll you find what is holding you up.

I have a 50 so i am sure it is different but on mine you have to pull the starter and look directly under the the carbs, there is a bolt that holds the shift rod, you will probably need a long extention and swivel to get it.

I would really highly recomend you get a manual if you are going to work on a motor, it has all this info in it.

OEM not clymer/seloc, can be had here at iboats or try ebay if you are short on cash.

Remove the hood and study the shift mechanism. You will see a horizontal rod that rotates when you shift. On the port end of that rod is a lever. In that lever there is a bolt or pin that moves up and down as you shift (not the one that attaches the lever to the rod). Remove that up/down bolt, which will release the shift rod.
I have no idea what may be in the way of accessing it. Probably nothing if you use the right tools, flex socket, long extension, whatever.
