Lower unit removal?

I have a 1961 40 hp Lark lll. I am trying to remove the lower unit, I have taken out the bottom screw behind the 1"x2" plate and the 6 bolts holding it on. It seems to be stuck. Do I need to have it in gear or am I missing something. I tried giving it a few taps with a rubber mallet but it didn't budge.

Sounds like you could be missing the workshop manual. Diagram may show you if you are missing something.
Other than that I can not help you. Sorry.

when I removed my lower unit on my 1970 115 evinurde I had the same thing. After looking under the rudder plate I saw I forgot to remove a bolt.

Yes I removed the bottom screw on the shift linkage. When I try to pull the lower leg down, only the front side (side closest to transom) moves and only drops about 1/16". Is it just stuck from being together for so long, or is there a trick that I don't know about? Thanks for the input.

Probably assembled the last time w/o grease on the driveshaft splines. If you're sure all fasteners are loose, it's brute force time. Good luck!

If all else fails, try dynamite.

Re: Lower unit removal?

When I disconnect the shift linkage, do I simply take out the single bolt, or do I actually have to disconnect something? Will I hurt anything hitting it with a mallet? Thanks.

You need to take out the lower screw in the shift linkage. It must be fully removed and in your hand. Then try with a large screwdriver to gently pry the lower unit down from the top housing.

Re: Lower unit removal?

I just wrote a long step by step reply but lost the whole thing in preview stage. Just did this job on a '75 85 horse. Too tired to retype it now. Will try again tomorrow. Hate typing. I think I have a method as I just did it.

Re: Lower unit removal?

if you have all the screws and bolt removed. remove the spark plugs and turn the flywheel. sounds like you have the drive and crank shaft rusted together. you also can try turning the motor upside down and soaking the inside of the leg with PB blaster, and hope it get to the shaft connections.

I've tried everything short of hooking my winch to the damn thing. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Re: Lower unit removal?

I once layed one down on the ground, chained the lower unit to a oak tree. Chained the powerhead to the truck bumper, about a foot of slack an it came right apart. Better make sure you have all the bolts out first. !!!!!!!

Re: Lower unit removal?

For cryin' out loud, c hawk...Take the other bolt out. You said you took out 6. How about the honkin' big one behind the rear cover? You have to remove the rear cover from the midsection (whole bunch of Phillips screws). Then you will see the big bolt. Hint: a hand impact screwdriver will help get those Phillips screws out.

Yep FR, there is a long bolt in the rear that goes in from the top.
