Lower unit seals possible to do myself?

Hi all. Just wondering if replacing some of the lower unit seals with a basic kit is something I can do myself or will I need special tools? The motor in question is in my signature. I'm just asking in general here, assuming no bearings have to be pulled/removed etc., and just replacing seals and gaskets or what ever. Thanks.

Those are pretty simple units, you should be able to do it your self. Do you have a manual, maybe read through the process and see if it sounds like something you could do.

Along with the seal kit, you will need a tube of 3M 847, a generic seal puller, some acetone, and a tool to pull the shift rod seal. FR on this forum sells them, or you could fabricate one yourself.

Thanks guys. No, don't have a manual yet but will try to get one. Special tool to pull a seal eh? Hmmm...Any idea how much he charges for his tool, and how do I locate this "FR" person to inquire about it? Or, at least get a look at it and see if it's something I can rig up myself. Thanks again.

For a one off seal job I would just tap a 5/16" thread into the shift shaft bushing and insert a 5/16" bolt. Then either pull it right out by grabbing the bolt or use a 1/4" rod put up against the underside of that bolt (when the halves are apart) and tap it out with a hammer.

This video will help you utilize the seal puller that High Trim recommended.

The 3M 847 can be obtained at any BRP dealer and is critical for sealing the spaghetti seal and the 6 bolts that hold the two halves together and I think I also put it on the Philips screw that the shifter rotates on at the bottom of the LU. Good luck.

as a note with that particular l/u, once you have it disassembled, inspect the bushing area that the d/s passes through and the top of the pinion gear rides against...if this area has been worn into an eggshape pattern then the pinion will have more side to side clearance than spec'd. How long will it work once reassembled? Who knows. If this bushing allows minimal movement of the d/s/pinion just look on it as a great day and move on.

Hi Olias. YOu can definitely do the job yourself. Here are some links that can walk you through the whole job. You can get a resal kit right here at iboats for about $25. While you can get the tool from FR, you don't really need it. You can use a spade bit with a socket extender like in the links below. You'll also need an automotive seal puller and a tube of 3M 847.
