Hi,
I am having trouble adjusting my lower unit to shift into reverse. The cable is adjusted as far as it will go and still won't hold in reverse. If I try to turn the prop it jumps out of reverse , like it wasn't all the way in. I set it in nuetral like the book showed when I put the lower unit back in place but when I took it out for the first time I had to hold down on the lever to keep it in gear. After adjusting the cable to the max It still won't stay in when I try to rotate the prop. There seems to be a lot of play in the shift shaft. I'm afraid to move it one spline on the shift shaft for fear it won't go in forward gear. What does the experts think?......................Jerry

Re: lower unit shift problem

If your to the end of the shift side on the motor then you either have a bad clutch dog and maybe rev. gear or the upper shift shaft is twisted

Hi Laddies,
At the end of the shift slide it is in reverse, but it won't stay there, like it isn't detented. It only pops out if I try to turn the prop backwards. Then it jumps to within 1/2 inch of the end and ratchets.........Jerry
