I have 1985 Rinker 3.0 L motor w/140MR Mercruiser drive unit. Took to dealer for repairs and he said the cost would be $4500 to repair(and thats not counting what could be wrong up in the boat. So for $4500, I'm going to learn about this, cause as I look at this from the back of the boat, there appears to be 3 openings heading into the gimble housing(water, exhaust, and shaft, shift cable etc.) So my questions are: How would metal shavings in upper/lower unit cause problems farther up in my boat. Is everything (upper/lower) always shot when you take the upper unit cap off and those two gears are all mushed up. It looked pretty straight forward as I looked at it til the dealer said that. Thought I could find whole drive assembly, bolt on and be good. Any and all help appreciated!!!!! Thanks!!!

Re: lower unit shot

A failed upper drive can cause metal shaving to get in to the lower unit, but the only way for them to get forward into the boat would be to take a handful and through them into the boat
