i have a Evinrude, 25hp,1976. model # 25603E
just bought it and found the prop to be slipping in the hub, ok took care of that.now i think from messin around with the adjustments to solve problem #1 i put it out of adjustment because at upper speeds, she kicks out of forward gear.have reset adjustments now but have it set at the extreme end of the forward shift so that reverse sometimes doesn't catch when shifted into. am interested in finding a rebuilt lower unit if anyone has any suggestions

Would it help if you loosen the handle and move it on the shaft instead of adjusting the cable?

hooty, i have disconnected the cable and made a adjustment on the shift lever adjustment under the manual shift lever connected to the shifter shaft. i have it adjusted to the extreme forward position without loosing reverse altogether when i shift back into reverse. think maybe a problem in the lower unit.??

Sure hope not. Disconnect the shift cable at the engine and shift l/u into forward by hand and see if it still jumps out.

c/6

Hooty

hooty,,,, done that and yes it still jumped out at upper rpm, stayed in at lower rpm. thats why i moved the lever adjustment to move the fork in the lower unit to hold the gears in tighter

this is why i believe it to be in the lower unit.i'll be running out again for some stripers hopefully tomarrow and will see if it holds in, had one trip since adjustment was made and it seemed to work. if this is the answer, i'm realy looking for an online address to hook up on for a reliable rebuilt lower unit to put on over the winter months or i'll pull it apart and give a look see to what is causing the kick out. thanks for all the help

Hi Schep

The 25Hp has a horizontally split gearcase, easy to work on. it is probably only the clutch dog that is worn, not an unusual error. the parts should cost around 50 bucks + gaskets and oil, if you can do it yourselves. If you have a manual and are used to tools you should be able to do it yourselves. Lot cheaper than a rebuild L/U

g dane
thanks for the info, i'm trying to squeeze the season out of it now and pull it apart during the winter months. then again if i can be sure of getting the parts when i need them, i'll do it now before the gears get all messed up. by the way, just quriuos, does that lower unit drop off after releasing the shaft houseing mid way up the shaft and is the drive shaft just sliped in with a spline shaft. it looks that way, so shouldn't be to difficult. thanks again for the info, much needed

When it jumps out of gear under the conditions noted, it's almost always the clutch dog. Have a 25 HP Evinrude on bench right now with same problem. You can usually hold motor in gear with a tight bungee cord if you're trying to get through season and don't have excessive wear.

Schep You wont even have to remove lower unit to change clutch dog, but maybe its the best if your not familiar to this. You are right about how to drop L/u, 4 small bolts, one big back, and disassemblying shift rod under the small lid,
remember to remove the lower bolt toally.

If you are just trying to get by for a while try reversing the clutch dog.
