I'm going to be reassembling MC1 sterndrive on my 1978 Sea Star Spoiler and have trans in forward but I know in process of cleaning lower unit after installing new impeller that top, splined end of shift rod or shift shift in the lower unit got rotated one way or the other. My question is, do I need to turn that shift in one direction or the other before reassembling lower unit to the upper. Also, do I need to use any adhesive with gasket between sterndrive and bell housing. Thanks in advance, Greg

Re: lower unit splined shift rod

mounting gasket go on dry , bellows adhesive or contact cement on the large rubber ring , the water inlet O ring.
Control box if full foward, when installing the drive.
The lower unit splined shaft is turned fully clockwise for fwd with the prop shaft locked counterclockwise.
