lower unit stuck in gear

I removed the Lu to do my impellor. I thought the shaft and the controls were in forward but I guess that's not the case. I started it up and it's stuck in forward gear.

I removed the lower unit to try an rotate the shaft back to neutral but it just spins completely around and doesn't mesh with anything. When I put the Lu on it definitely did not spin like that. We tried moving the cam or gears around gentely with a screw driver to try and set the shaft gears again but no luck. But the prop now spins freely in both directions, so i guess it moved into neutral. I have some mechanics here telling me I have to pay them to take the whole thing apart and see what's going on.

is there anything i can do to try and get the shift shaft back in alignment>?

yep you can spin the shifter 180 degrees and be out of wack. I,ve done it. turn the prop while trying to shift the gear shaft on the LU find the neutral position and then double check for forwards then reverse. once your sure your in neutral again align the cam so that the high side is facing just to the left front of the lUand the low side is just to the right of the front of the LU keeping the middle of the cam straight forawrds for the correct neutral psition. now double check your shifter is in neutral and sock the LU back up tests the shifter before bolting it all back together just in case you didn,t get it right.
