Lower Unit Swap

I'm considering swaping out the lower unit on my 1966 650 Merc 4 Cyl. Current unit grinds when put into gear. My Buddy has a spare lower unit for his 1975 85 hp 4 cylinder that he's offered to me. will this work?? any input will be great.

I Realise that it should just swap out, what I was wondering is if the gear ratio in the new leg is going to be different than the old one. Also some one told me that the only differance between a 65 hp <br />4 Cyl and 85 Hp 4 Cyl is the gear ratio in the lower leg. If so how will this affect the power head????
