I can;t find a reputable mechanic in area so I pose a question. How do you test the lower unit for leaks in seals in a 40 hp, evinrude

Re: lower unit test

You can do it with air pressure. It should be done in two steps, first, put in no more than 6 or 8 lbs of air pessure and look for air bubbles, if none are found, then put in 16 - 18 lbs of air pressure and look for air bubbles. I always take the lower unit off and dunk it in a tank of water. Look at the shift rod seal, and prop shaft seals. No air bubbles = no leaks.

That's about how I do it. You can also preform a vacume test on the lower unit also.
