Lower unit thrust washers

I'm working on an Evinrude "Fisherman" model 6702. The lower unit was left with water in the oil and has some rust damage. I'm swapping parts from another lower unit and the parts breakdown I have shows thrust washers on either side of the clutch dog. However, neither the original or the "donor" gear set has the thrust washers. Is it possible I have a model that doesn't use the washers? Or could they be missing from both units? I'd appreciate any input from the experts.

Re: Lower unit thrust washers

I *think* they're supposed to be on any 5 or 6hp gearcase.

The washers are actually on the face of the gears, spacing the gears off the splined section of the propshaft. Check to see if they are stuck in the gears - they often are. The gears are grooved to fit them, so they'll be flush.
