Lower unit / ticking noise

I have an 89 85hp suzuki. The lower unit broke and would no longer shift. I bought a used lower unit and installed it. Now I have a constant ticking noise even in nuetral. I'm guessing it's either the lower unit gears or the shaft where the lower unit joins. The ticking speeds up when the motor speeds up.

Can anyone else come up with a better guess of the cause or give me some guidance in what to do next? Or does anyone want to buy this boat? ;)

Rod, he said he "even" has it in N. I'm assuming that the answer to your question is yes.

I'd assume that whomever reinstalled the lower unit didn't get the shifter centered and the clutch dog is not centered, or something like that.

Might disconnect it from the remote control and see if you could move the shifter back and forth slightly and get it to stop which would indicate misalignment of shift linkage.

Otherwise don't know.

Mark

Yes, when in gear. It's less noticable at low speeds but it gets louder as I speed up. I'll try playing with the shift linkage.

I think we are onto it. As you speed up you put more pressure on the slipping clutch dog which should make it slip more and make more noise.

Adjusting the linkage properly should solve the problem. Then I'd drain and replace your lower unit oil in the event you have metal shavings there from the experience.

Mark

By adjusting the linkage I've been able to reduce the noise, but I can't seem to get rid of it completley. Think the lower unit is junk or on its way to being junk?
