I have a 1977 200hp lower unit problem, with the motor off, with the throttle in forward gear I can move the propeller with my hand any direction, (Like if it was in neutral) same function with reverse. If I push down with a screwdriver the shift rod the propeller will lock in place and I can’t move the propeller if I let go the propeller will be free ageing, however if I go to the intercostal I can run all day at idle. Motor will runs at high speed but the boat will never make out of the hole, any help I will really appreciated. Do I have a bad Lower Unit?
Thank you

Re: Lower Unit Troubleshooting

You need to adjust the shift cable. First I would disconnect it at the motor and shift by hand. That should confirm that the lower unit is OK. Then adjust - -

Re: Lower Unit Troubleshooting

Thanks for your help. I did disconnect the shift cable and shift by hand and it will shift find by hand but I haven't adjust the cable don't know how to do it. I have a question: How can the boat runs fine at idle on the lake even if I can move the propeller by hand when is on gear? Also do you know what the recommended champion Spark Plugs number?
Thank you
