I just wanted to add this to the forum in case someone runs across this problem. I just performed this job, and mercury calls for a special tool to replace the wear sleeve.

To remove the sleeve, I used a pipe wrench and a pair of channel locks. I just twisted and pulled until it came off the bottom of the shaft, and thereafter, it was easily slid off the shaft.

To replace it, I used a 1 inch piece of galvanized pipe from the hardware store. It had to be deburred, but it was an almost perfect fit for the wear sleeve. I just rammed it down onto it a few times and it was on! No need to attempt trying to beat it on with anthing else, the wear sleeve will just bend.

The lower unit I was working on was an '87 70 hp mercury. This lower unit is identical to my '90 model 100 hp and my '95 model 115 so I am sure that it will most likely apply to all 90hp to 125 powerheads.

Hope this helps someone in the future :)

Kevin

Re: lower unit wear sleeve replacement

The wear sleeve part number is 42461A1. I got it from www.mercruiserparts.com.

The wear sleeve is a very snug fit over the bottom of the shaft, hence the need for the special tool or the 1" galvanized pipe to put it back on. This is the first one that I have replaced. My local wrench said that he had never replaced one, so I doubt that they go out often.

k
