lower unit will not shift??

I have my lower unit taken off of my 1984 75hp mercury. For some reason it will not shift into neutral. I tried putting the shift control in forward gear then install the unit, then shift i back but it will not work.


any suggestions on fixing this i do not suspect internal damage could be something obvious.

Take the lower unit back out and turn the shift shaft through F-N-R if it will go. If not there is a lower unit problem.

Put the lower unit in F. You can tell F because the prop will only turn in one direction and the overrun clutch will click as you turn it.

Put your engine control in F position.

Reassemble.

If you have no mechanical problems, it should shift.
