I have a Mercury model 1150 I am trying to put an lower unit on. I have 2 questions. It likes about 3/4 inch going all the way up. It is not the shift or the water pipe. I can tell that the drive shaft splines are goint partly in the motor but it stops short of bolting all the way up. Also the other unit had the shift that goes only about 30 degrees each way and this one goes almost all the way around. I have followed the manual but it does address these 2 issues. I appreciate any help.

Re: Lower unit won't bolt all the way up

I had the same problem with my lowewr unit on a 850. the Exhaust boot came off when dropping the lowe unit. when I reinstalled it,i put the boot back upside down. Make sur the ths taper in the boot opens toward the top.I then could could get the lower unit close enough to the mid section to start the nuts and rear bolt. I slowly tightened each a little at a time and it drew together. Make sure you grease the splines on your drive shaft before reassembly/

The bolt will start but they will not pull it up without excessive force. It goes so far and then it stops.

Your problem is with the shift shaft. First the shaft is not indexed to the upper shaft properly, maybe the rev. lock is improperly installed and if you watch the upper shaft under the carb as you try to tighten the nuts I think you will see it pushing the shaft up and thats a sure sign the aren't aligned
