I have dropped my lower unit on a alpha 1 gen one to change the impeller pump. I have read and fully understand the remating procedure now The problem im having is when i turn the shift shaft on the lower when it is separated I cant get it to engage in forward where the prop locks in the counter clockwise rotation. What would be causing this. The lower worked just fine until i changed the water pump and now :mad::mad:

changing just the pump has no bearing on the shifting. what does happen when you turn the splined shaft in both directions

You probably aren't turning the shift shaft far enough to engage forward. Can be difficult by hand. Try using a rag on the spline and use a set of plyers (CAREFULLY) so they do not damage the shaft and see if it turns further to engage the drive.

It can also help if you turn the prop by hand at the same time - the shift shaft can't fully turn until the gears mesh, which can be difficult if the input shaft is not turning (engine not turning it).

If i turn the shift shaft all the way counter clockwise the output shaft turns clockwise when turning the prop clockwise. When i try to turn the shift shaft all the way clockwise the output shaft turns counter clockwise when turning the prop. It doesnt lock in any position

Ayuh,.... What are you calling the Output Shaft...
The only Output shaft in a lower unit is the Prop Shaft...

Re: lower unit wont lock

rotate the splined shaft that connects to the engine clockwise (the shaft that has the u-joint assy) - it will be difficult as you have a new impeller you are turning as well

while rotating, turn the shift shaft/foot clockwise so it is facing straight forward

once the shift shaft/foot is facing forward, the propshaft sould rotate clockwise (looking at it from the back)

if this does not work, it is possible you did not get the splines of the shift shaft on the lower half lined up properly with the shift foot assy in the upper

With the lower unit separeted,
If i am trying to lock the drive in forward should I be turning the prop clockwise or counter clockwise?

turn the splined shaft clockwise as far as it goes and gently turn the prop counterclockwise till is stops
