My skeg is broke so I have to bring in the lower unit for welding. I have been told a few times: 'its easy, just remove the bolts holding it up and let it drop'

I put it in neutral removed the cowling, prop and those 4 bolts; lightly tapped the lower unit with a rubber mallet and....nothing. I am thinking that the the procedure is not as simple as stated.

I would not mind waiting for the Mercury manual I ordered but it will be 2 more weeks before it arrives!!??? (not cool).

Is there something simple that I am missing?

One more thing.....oil in or oil out for close to the gear case skeg repair?

hope someone can help,

Re: lower unit

thanks jims3000....now another part of this :p

The trim tab just above the propeller?
I have done basic work on engines before but am a bit perplexed on this one. I am a boating newbie.

If I look up underneath the trim tab (its a small space) I can see a nut located on a bolt but can't seem to be able to remove the trim tab.

The 5th bolt in the left/right trim plate just spins like its stripped. Is it stripped or is it supposed to spin like that?
