First of all I just want to thank everybody that is on here and reads these questions that we all have and thank everybody who answers them cause this is a great place to get great advice so thank you to all very much.

My question is on the lower unit of my 1985 85hp Force motor, there are two screws do there. Is that were I put the lower unit oil? If so, how much do I put and when do I stop? Also, can I drain the old oil out of there? What oil do ya'll suggest?

Thank u for you time

Re: Lower Unit

There should be 3 screws. one on the very bottom and two on the side. the one on the bottom is the drain the next one up is the shift pin. DO NOT TOUCH THIS ONE. I learned the hard way. the next one up is the vent. it might be labeled vent, mine is. put your drain pan under and take out the bottom one first then remove the vent let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to make sure it is all out. they sell a hose kit at the boat store to refill. it screws into the drain hole and fills it from the bottom up when the oil starts to come out the vent hole then its full. put the vent screw back in first and this will help from oil dripping out when you remove the fill hose. good luck its not that hard just dont touch the shift pin screw.

Re: Lower Unit

i'm going to ask a stupid question sir, should I raise the motor up to drain it and then lower the motor to fill it up? Also, how often should I change this oil out?

Thank you sir

Re: Lower Unit

I have a 40 hp Force by Mercury, and recently changed my oil. It was a simple matter once I had the right pump. You can get a simple pump from Walmart for around 6 or 7 dollars. It screws into the oil bottle with a pick-up tube that extends to the bottom of the bottle. This pumps into another tube that screws into the lower unit - lower drain screw hole.

Keep the motor vertical. With the vent screw out, pump oil through the drain hole to fill up the lower unit until oil dribbles out the vent hole. Screw in the vent screw (use new gasket/seal washer if it has one). Remove the pump tube from the drain hole and screw in the drain screw (use new gasket/seal washer if it has one).

This technique ensure no air bubbles are trapped, resulting in less than a full lower unit.
