Tried to run my 1987 88hp today on muffs after cleaning head covers and taking out tstats to check an overheat problem on the starboard bank. She was not pumping any water, nothing from tell tail or anywhere I could see. Shut her down quickly even before any alarm. Removed the LU and found a coating of black goo all over everything. I am sure it was old fuel deposits, because it smelled like gas. Looks like maybe when I tilt the engine up to travel fuel ran out of the bowl and somehow found a way into the LU. I also had a leak before in my primer solenoid so maybe that was it. Anyhow it messed up some of the rubber grommets, gaskets, o-rings etc. The impeller looked ok but it was time to be changed. Anyone seen this before? Parts are on order.

Tried to run my 1987 88hp evinrude today on muffs, hose on, good pressure, after cleaning the head covers out and working on an overheat condition on the starboard bank. She fired up but was not pumping water, nothing from tell tail or anywhere. Shut her down quickly before any alarm. Dropped LU and found a black crusty goo layer on everything. It was fuel because it had a strong gas smell. I had a leak in my primer solenoid and it must have drained down into the LU somehow. This ruined the grommets, gaskets, and o-rings. The impeller looked ok, but is due for a change. Parts are on order. Anyone seen this before? Thanks
