Ok I have a problem with the lower unit on my 50hp johnson (1972) it won't shift. I know its not the shift cable i'm pretty sure its the clutch dog or the gearing in the lower unit, it is just stuck in neutral, won't go into reverse or forward....What i want to know is What years and HP levels of lower units are interchangeable with my electric shift 50hp 1972 johnson. I see several from 1970-1980 that look similar but i don't want to buy one and have it not fit. Is there any way to get a list of the one's that will... Like for example with a 40hp 1970 johnson lower unit fit it, and so on? Any help is grealy appreciated...

if it is eletricshift it dont have a shift cable. i have change a eletric shift to a manul shift . i am pretty sure that a 1970 t0 a 1974 is the same .
you have shift cylidnoids for reverse and nutral . it is spring loadedi in foward .
you may take it apart and fix it . i have a diagram on it if you need it. papasage

I guess its not a shifting problem at all then, it must have the gear teeth all eaten away or something... I'm just thinking about replacing the whole lower unit instead of taking this one apart cause i saw some for cheap, but i'm gonna take it to my local mechanic and see what he says, i just don't feel like paying more to have this one repaired then i would for a new lower unit...
