I'm doing mine as we speak, which is a '61 40HP rude. The only special tool I needed for mine was the tool to tap out the brass bushing that houses the o-ring for the shift rod. F_R on this forum makes the tool, I believe; I just made one at the machine shop I have access to at work. Its basically a 5/16" rod cut (or tapered) down to 1/4" on one end.

A good seal puller for the upper seal would be a plus, but not necessary. Like Gas Giant says, the shift rod seal remover is a huge plus. Yes F_R does sell the tool and it's the best investment you'll make for the money. They're quite resonably priced.

Yea, Gas Giant and I share a lot in common for the motors we own. ;)

I'm taking a drive to pick up a rebuilder lower unit, for my '59 Johnson 35 today, so that'll be a few of us doing this job. LOL
