lower water pump housing--pics

After i pry the out the lower water pump housing i found this pin on the gears. wher does it belong???

Is it hollow?

That looks like the roll pin from the shift shaft...
Did you remove the shift shaft? If so look on the lower end of the shaft and see if you can find a hole the size of the pin.

There isn't anything like that near the water pump (to my knowledge anyway)

i did some re search on line and found out that it broke offthe vent screw plug. but i am confuse how it got between the lower water pump houseing and the gears.

That is where the vent screw screws in. just above the berring and below the pump . When you get too much oil in the lower unit it squeezes through the berring and out the vent.
