Can someone tell me the proper way to lower the mast of a Chrysler sailboat? I was told to remove the backstay, undo the bolt between the mast and the deck, and then lower it with two other guys help. Does that sound right? Is it that easy?

I am trying to replace/rewire my masthead light at the very top. I also want to install an anchor light up at the top. I am too scared to winch myself up there because I don't trust the rigging (its pretty old and hasnt been well kept).

Thanks guys.

Re: lowering the mast of a chrysler 22 foot

is it steped on the deck or does it do through to the keel ?

i set up a gin pole on the deck of my J-24 (35 ft high mast keel steped ) that is held stable with 3 wire ropes (not much money)

you have to raise it 3 ft+ on a j-24 before you can lay it over but its a 2 person job once you make a good setup

you need play around and find its blance point then you can hoist it up a bit and carefully get it horizontal as you lower it to the deck

you dont want rush it or use crappy stuff to handle it because if it starts to get away from you its going to go down hard

http://chryslersailing.lizards.net/
