I've been using the GPS on my cell phone for a long time now and have been considering moving to a real GPS. I was going to go with the whole touch screen DVD/Radio/Mobile Video for my truck when I stumbled across this little item.

It's dual function! It has automotive maps w/ satellite overlays as well as maps for lakes and coastal waters. It even supports trail recording so you could use it on your ATV on the trails. This really sealed the deal for me, it gave me a GPS on the boat and in the truck!

I picked one of these up as an end of the year closeout and i've been quite impressed so far, the display is easy to read and the unit is highly configurable. It has a built in MP3 player with 5 gb of space to store mp3's (another item I didn't have yet was a mp3 player)

The only thing I found that I don't like is the unit's built in FM modulator but it really isn't it's fault as they can't make FM Modulators as strong as they used to be able to. The unit catches some static as it is trying to broadcast to a FM station.. You can just plug it in if you have an AUX setting on your radio with no problems tho.

So has anyone else tried this unit??? I have yet to take it out on the water but come spring time I'll be sure to post an update!!

I love my Lowrance BUT i have found the auto units are NOT well sealed compared to the marine units ( which really shows up in the salt splash)

i wonder if the auto unit shows all the tide, current and other marine info on the charts ?

And the lack of NEMA 183 to connect with the radio and other things as well as the lack of NEMA 2000 to network to fuel flow and all the other nice things to give info makes the marine unit at 500 dollars a good deal to me;)

From Lowrance's site:

Taking a whole new direction in utility and value, the iWAY? 600C is the first to offer both precision street-ready and marine-ready navigation... including a wealth of road mapping, plus charting for inland and coastal waters with depth contours. Also displays detailed satellite imagery of cities with streets overlay. All in one complete *waterproof* package at an affordable price

Not sure about the tides and such as I am a fresh water guy but it does show depth contour's. I'm sure some sacrifices were made to get everything into one package but I was looking at about $1000.00 to put a setup in my truck (perm mounted) and then left with nothing for the boat. This gives me the best of both worlds all for less than $500.00

For me it worked out great I do tons of driving and finding remote spots in my line of work and my phone gps just wasn't good enough.

I looked at a display model. Very nice display. A bit pricy for my cheapo tastes, but was also concerned about the hardrive life. I haven't had a laptop hd go more than two years. The counter guy didn't know if it was a real hd or ERAM. He didn't know if you could use Navonics charts or Lake Hotmaps, either. Also looked at the XOG but don't like touch-screen. My impression was that it would make a good car gps and an OK boat navigation gps.

Re: Lowrace iWay600c

I just got my iway 6000 for Christmas and I love it. I have only used it in the car so far as our boat is scheduled to be delivered in Feb. My wife ordered it from tigergps for $399 shipped. This was by far the cheapest we found and from a reputable e-tailer.
