hey guys, a few years back my wife bought me a lowrance color fish finder nav combo, not sure off hand what the modle# is i am at work right now. when we got the unit i bought the $200 navionics "fishing chip" since i wanted as much information when navigating and fishing as i can get. i put the chip in and not only were there no contour lines for changes in depth, the graphics were as if my 3 year old son drew the islands and coast line. every island was made up of strait boxy lines, no curves any where, it didn't show where the chanels were any depth at all, none of the little feader creeks that go for miles, it was light blue for water/ land was a tan color. My car GPS i bought in europe had more detail of my fishing area than the chip gave me! when you zoom out there were dozens of "grid squares" other than the normal lon/lat. I called lowrance and navionics and told them that the base map that was preloaded in the unit was ok, but there was some thing obviously wrong with the fishing chip. lowrance said to talk to navionics, navionics said that it doesn't show much in my region because there are not many contour lines and the ones we have are so gradual that it isn't even noticeable. when i asked why they sell a chip for my area then, they just said we cover most areas some will be more accurate than others. have any of you had this problem? is there a setting in my lowrance unit that needs to be turned on/off or some other adjustment that needs to be made? or did i throw away $200 for a chip that is as useful as a compass to find bottom structure in 150' of water??? thanks for any help you can provide.

hey NetDoc, just so you know since you are in the market for one, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the unit i have. It works awesome and is very accurate! I can go to the same rock pile 8 miles off shore that is the size of a wheelbarrel and only sticks up off the bottom a foot or so, time and time again, no hunting for it when i get in the area. when your track goes directly over the spot you marked you see in on the sonar. i can also easily tell from looking at the screen if it is sand, hard bottom, live bottom. The navigation is DEAD on! I couldn't be happier with the machine my frustration is directed tward Navionics for spending $200 for a chip that i thought (and is advertized) to give me a lot more information and be a great asset on the water. and as a customer I don't appreaciate the too bad your problem attitude i got when i called them. I would strongly recomend a Lowrance unit just not the Navionics chip, put the $200 to bait and gas and have a great trip!

But if I buy a Lowrance, aren't I stuck with using Navionics?

Re: lowrance fish finder nav system

I think so one thing i can do for ya if you are interested is i will put my fishing chip in my system and check your area...key largo right..... you have a lot more contour lines with rapid depth changes than i have here in naples florida. Here when i leave the pass it is 12' deep between the markers, heading off shore it slopes to 20' in a mile then the next 8 miles slopes off so slow that you are only at 32' deep 9 miles out! so the chip might be dead on for all i know since there isnt any dramatic depth changes. it turns out that it is useless for me though, but it might show the changes off the keys. I'll check this week for ya. The base map that is preloaded in the unit isn't bad though, with it i can see almost every little feeder creek in the back bay and some are only 8' wide, and it has a lot of pre marked fishing spots and wrecks, it is about the same as looking at a good Florida Sportmans fishing maps, and it shows aprox depth on the map along with markers and chanels........If i was going to buy a new unit i would look in to the satalite overlays, i need to check to see if they make "that chip" for my unit, it would be sooooo sweet!
