Just bought used boat. It came with a X85 fish locator the seller said it works. I have not had a chance to put the boat in water yet. I tried to turn on the unit but only got a black screen. There is power going to the unit. Does the transducer need to be in water before it will work?

You can go to Lowrance.com and download the manual for that unit. It should come on even out of the water.

if you have a black screen then you have a display problem. You should be able to see the display fine. When you go to a marine store like boaters world all they are is in simulation mode. So you should be able to see something even if the depth reades 0.0.

It should work out of the water but the depth will not be right. The sound travels 4 times the speed in the water. So 2 feet will look like 8 feet in air. X85 is a great depth finder. If it solid black turn the sensitivy down, take off your sunglasses. If you can read it at all find system reset and do it. That is a good place to start.
