Re: lu 50 blue sripe mercury

The lower unit is spring loaded into forward gear and there is a cam on the end of the shift shaft that pushes the unit into neutral or farther into reverse, if the shift shaft has not been removed and the cam is still on the shaft, with the unit removed from the engine use a pair of pliers and shift the unit into reverse (there will be a lot of spring tension) once in reverse shift the engine into reverse and reinstall the unit. If the shift shaft has been removed the cam will need to be reinstalled on the shift

Put the unit in a vice so it's level as possible. drain the oil, remove the shiftshaft cross your fingers and use a light to look into the hole if you can see the cam move it with a screwdriver or something till you see the splined hole slip the shaft back in and install the retainer the reinstall the unit on the motor. If you can't see the cam play with the unit and try to get it down where you can move it around for the spline to line up. If it won't when the the carrier and prop shaft need to be removed so you can get into the unit for repair.

If it doesn't want to turn all the way a round then it probably is right, have you tried to put more pressure on it with pliers?

I've discovered that a small socket (can't recall the size) will fit over the shift shaft splines perfectly. You can then use a ratchet to rotate the sift shaft without worries of marring the splines with a pair of pliers or vise grips. Ask me how I know :(:D
