Howdy, i want to change the oil in the lower unit for my new (1967) evinrude 9.5 hp sportwin. Does anyone have any suggestions for what type of oil I should use. Is there a special type for these older motors? And will it take only one regular size bottle to do the job.

Also, can these motors be hooked up to a speed and tach ometer?

Thanks guys,

Hi Joey

You can use any Hi-Vis lower unit lube. I use pennzoil from wallyworld. 1 QT will more than do it. Fill from the bottom when you do it and replace the screw seals/washers. Any boat can have a speedo. Just buy one online or at a marine store. The only electrics are for the backlight, which can be hooked to a switch and the battery if needed. Or to another gauges hot terminal if you have a console. As for the Tach, I'm not sure if your system can use a regular Tach, but you can get a "TinyTach" which will work with any motor. Link is below.

tinytach.

LU lube is sold in two types: Hypoid 90 for old mechanical shift engines like yours, and Hi-Vis for electric shifts and newer engines. Hypoid 90 is what your engine was designed for.

Don't know offhand. We sold our Evinrude dealership in 1968, but were still using hypoid in the non-selectric shift engines at that time.

Since some of the manual shift LU's didn't change until the mid-1970's, that may have been the change over period.

Uuhhh, I think you'll find that Hi-Vis gear oil is for mechanical shifting gearcases. It is a petroleum base oil. OMC/Bomb also has HPF gear oil which is partially synthetic, also for mechanical shift gearcases. "Premimum Blend" is for electric shift and hydro-electric shift gearcases.

P.V. -

We're talking about a 1967 engine. Hypoid 90 is what it was designed for and what you will find on store shelves today labelled "for mechanical shift outboards".

Hi-Vis is labelled "for modern outboard and sterndrive units". That would not include a 1967 9.5 hp engine.

For reference, I'm looking at LubriMatic products.

As for the gasket, should they carry this at my local boating store, or wally-world or could I just use a copper washer?

Thanks again...

If you mean the oil fill and drain plug nylon gaskets, these should be available at your local marine store. Bring your old one or the plug to be sure of the size.

I stand by my post!!! Hi-Vis is NOT for electric shift motors!! There IS confusing info out there!! Mercury also make a "Premimum" gear oil but it is not for electric shift outboards, (they never made an electric shift unit!!) Hypoid 90 may be used in a mechanical gearcase BUT... that can be constuded as the same oil used in your Ford's rear end???? I've got alot of farmer's in my area who use gear oil for all their gear needs. Tractors, combines.. and outboards! I don't sell lubiplate products because in the early years, Lubricate was colored white. NOW that's confusing!!!

P.V. -

You're right that the lube suppliers have confused the issue with contradictory labelling.

Almost all of the marine stores in my area have large displays of LubriMatic products, which are labelled as in my previous post. But, I readily agree that another manufacturer's product could have quite different labelling.

So, as with most things, it's up to the buyer to know their engine/drive and to read the product's application info.
