LU oil (Please answer)

I have a 1971 55HP Chrysler. I had to change bearing cage. I now filled my LU with LU oil. The motor was on the tilt stop when I did this. It took only 12 ouces of oil before it came out of the vent hole. That seems like little to me. Is this about what a LU would take? I did not have a pump so I could not do it with the engine straight up and down. As I said it was on the tilt stop. Did I need to add more? If so can I add it thru the vent hole?

Re: LU oil

Noah,

Buy a pump. They cost about $8 at West Marine. Also, start looking on ebay for a manual for that thing.

I have a manual and it does not say how much oil it takes. As for West Marine. They are $24 not $8. So I was just trying to see if the way I did it would be okay.
thanks

Pumps are available at auto stores and Sears too. The lower takes more than 12 oz but not too much--maybe 16-20 oz. HOWEVER: Too little oil starves the upper bearing and we wouldn't want to do that, would we?

NO--you can not just add it through the vent. It will just bubble and spit out. Unless you have a small diameter tube or a big syringe and want to take hours adding it.

WalMart has them here, a generic one for about 7$. Like Frank said, there's no other practical way.

How's that thing treating you? My dad had a 70's Chrysler 55 and the starter always went out. I've heard it was sort of their trademark.
