Will have LU together this weekend. What LU oil do I use. My Chrysler manual says Chrysler LU oil. But not available. Can I use Mercury, or what brand do you suggest?

Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Pennzoil, Mobil, Pep Boys, Etc. Natural or synthetic, although synthetic is supposed to be better in higher horsepower applications. As long as it is 85-95 EP Marine lower unit oil, it doesn't matter. See that 140 in my avatar? It uses Pennzoil synthetic. All my engines do. Pennzoil was on close-out sale at Wal-Mart for 1 buck a quart---SO----I bought about 15 quarts; everything they had left.

EP stands for extreme pressure. Some brands are called "Hypoid" after the special helical cut of the gear teeth.

Lower unit or auto rear end oil contains sulphur compounds to enhance its pressure bearing ability. This gives it a distinct odor. Smell it once and you will never forget. The main difference between auto rear end oil and marine EP oil is that the marine has more corrosion inhibitors.

You pays your money, you takes your choice. It's the same argument as to whether to use branded TCW-3 or Generic oil, Seafoam and gas stabilizers or additives. Everyone will have their own opinion as to which is best and you better use their brand or your engine will self destruct.
