Hello,
I removed the drive and found drive gear lube/oil in the gimbal bellows. Everything else about it looked OK. Bearing, U-joints and drive shaft all looked and felt OK. I did check the alignment and it does need to be aligned. But back to the gear lube...what seal in the drive is this likely getting past?

The yoke seal, that's the one that is just inside the drive behind the ujoints......
It should be the easiest one to replace....
However, you need to drain the drive & look for signs of water intrusion....
You may have a bad bellows or a leak somewhere else.......
There are members on this forum much more familiar with your drive & I'm sure you will get some more input.....;)

first we have to insure its an SX style drive and not an older clutch dog cobra.
in either case its the input shaft seal thats leaking and must be repaired.
but the procedure is vastly different on the cobra than on the SX, however there were a few SX style units that were a Joint Venture(JV) that were badged as a cobra SX.

Re: lube in SX Cobra gimbal bellows

OK thanks

this is the Volvo Penta SX drive...with an OMC motor (Ford). And I believe they used the OMC transom shield.

Anyway, I have been looking through the manual and I think I understand what you are referring to by the "drive yolk seal". Sounds like this is the seal associated with the roller bearing in the pinion bearing carrier. Is that correct? Sounds like if this is taken apart that the bearings in the carrier have to be replaced. Is that correct?

the input yoke seal on the cone clutch SX is not hard to replace, you will need a true arc snap ring pliers to remove the retainer, first remove the input bearing box, then support the box and remove the 12pt hex bolt, yours may still be an allen head, then remove the pinion from the bearing box. inspect the seal surface on the input yoke, if damaged a drive shaft assy is all thats offered. you will need to finnish pressing apart the bearing box, clean everything, install a new yoke seal install a NEW crush sleeve, press the bearings back together enough to lightly preload the tapered bearings, insert the yoke with a NEW bolt, carefully follow the service manual and tighten the bolt in 1/8th turn increments while checking the rolling torque with a dial type inch pound torque wrench, takes an hour or so tops.
2 if drive R&R is done at the same time.
if the rolling torque is exceeded at anytime you MUST disasemble the bearing box and replace the crush sleeve with another and try again.
may be easiest to simply remove the bearing box and drop the assy of at a volvo dealer.
like I say it aint hard just requires a few minor tools and careful attention to details.
