Hey Ya'll,

Just got a 1977 Johnson 70 (70EL77S) Got a digital user manual on order but trying to get some things done on it now. It has been sitting for a while so I changed out the spark plugs, cleaned the rats nest out of the intake manifold and drained the oil out of the lower. (No milky oil) Just wondering what is the correct weight gear oil and fluid capacity on the lower. Also, may be a dumb question but does the engine pull the same oil from the lower up into the engine itself or does the engine have a seperate camoflauge drain plug and fill plug? If so, what weight oil do I use and what is the capacity on it? Also, any other things that I should check out before cranking this bad boy up, other than the compression and fire? Thanks in advance for your help!

engine is a 2 stroke and has no crankcase oil. its oil comes from the fuel and unless that is an oil injected motor which i doubt. you will need to mix gas and oil at a 50-1 ratio, make CERTAIN you use outboard motor 2 cycle oil its not the same as 2 cycle oil for lawn equipment or dirt bikes.

gear oil should be 75-90 marine gear lube buy a quart jug, pull both the drain and full level plug force fluid in through the drain plug untill it comes out the top plug. and quickly replace the spout of the jug with the plug.. its messy and it sucks but its the only reliable way to make sure its full

I have the exact same model.

No engine oil as was described earlier, two stroke engines such as ours get their lubrication from the fuel. You mix the oil with the gas. FYI running this engine on straight gasoline without oil absolutely WILL destroy it.

for the lower unit, i ordered a pump(available on Iboats and cheap). It fits on a quart bottle of gear oil and pumps the lower unit full from the bottom(drain/fill) hole. You don't want to fill from the top hole because it may introduce air pockets and not completely fill the lower unit with oil.

Also, grab some prop shaft lube and lube up the prop shaft splines as well. This will keep the prop from attaching itself to the shaft.

Coils are very easy to change, it's one wire to the power pack, a ground wire, and the spark plug wire. Three bolts hold it to the coil bracket. Very simple, remove the wires, remove the bolts, and put the new one on in reverse order.

First I would determine if the coil is actually your problem. Move the third coil to another cylinder and see if the missing spark follows it. If it does follow the coil, then the coil is probably bad, if not, you have some more searching to do.

Thanks Guys! Great info! I haven't checked the fire or compression yet but the guy I purchased it from is very trustworthy and said that he had it running well last year. It is in great condition minus what I mentioned earlier. I was also reading that it would be a good idea to replace or rebuild the water pump. Do you think this would be something good to do before I fill the case back up with oil?

you can fill the case with oil before or after you do the pump it doesnt matter, the pump sits above the gearbox in a non lubed area, you should really get a manual if you want to do stuff to your motor

Yes, get a FACTORY repair manual. Not the Seloc or other off brand manual. It will cost some money, but it's money VERY well spent if you plan on repairing this engine.
