Lube points on engine - general guidance needed

My owners manual (2004 Johnson 115HP 4-stroke) is a bit iffy on the instructions for lubing the grease points for the steering ram and other grease points. I'm pretty sure I can use the same product (Johnson calls for their own TripleGuard grease) for all engine grease points, correct? I don't have ready access to Johnson products - what else is suitable? And what about frequency?

I assume I can wipe off visible/old excess grease, pump in new grease until it starts to roll out the seals and then I'm done.

Thanks!

I use Marine wheel bearing grease on the motor and trailer. The last I bought came from West Marine. As you add grease, you will see it pushing water out. As you say, when you see it "roll out the seals" thats enough. Easy to over grease and make a mess. I grease my trailer out on the road after some miles just because. I have a Johnson 115 also. Sure do enjoy it.
